Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you provide a free estimate?
Yes, our initial consultation is free of charge because we understand that it’s really hard to get an idea of how much your project will cost on your own. After our first meeting (which typically lasts about 30-45 minutes), we will provide you with a “Budget Estimate”. This estimate doesn’t get into too many of the small details of your project, but will give you a basic range of cost before going to the next step of the process. The next step is usually entering the design phase. Once a design agreement is signed we discover your unique style, draw up plans, make material selections, which leads to creating a proposal with a detailed scope of work.
Q: WHY DO YOU ASK ABOUT STARTING WITH A BUDGET?
We are able to design and build some great living spaces and having a budget lets us know what kind of materials and amenities that we are looking at building with. Sometimes a client's budget is unrealistic for the space being built, and it would be a waste of time for both us and the client to move forward with unrealistic expectations.
Q: SHOULD I OBTAIN MORE THAN ONE ESTIMATE FOR MY PROJECT?
Comparing more than one estimate is always a good idea, but judging service, craftsmanship, and customer service can be tough. We always advise homeowners, whether they choose Buildersmith or another company, to only hire the contractor that you feel the most comfortable with. Remember, no matter who you choose, these individuals will be in your home on a daily basis, so you must completely trust them.
Q: WHEN DO YOU TYPICALLY SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS?
We are typically available for in-home meetings from Monday through Thursday during the day with some evening availability. We also set aside time on Friday mornings for appointments as well. We do not set appointments from Friday afternoon through the weekend. We believe that dedicated weekend time with family and friends is important for a healthy personal and work life. Q: SHOULD I PLAN FOR ADDITIONAL COSTS BEYOND THE PROPOSAL?
This can be a difficult question, but it is always wise to put aside additional funds beyond the anticipated cost. Unforeseen issues, to include poor framing from previous contractors, bad wiring, rotten wood, can result in additional costs. These issues are only found once the project is underway and walls and floors are opened up. It is always our desire to limit these expenses and predict these problems in advance, however, there are times when immediate attention is needed.
Q: HOW DO YOU HANDLE CHANGE ORDERS?
Any work that will result in additional cost to the client will be processed through a change-order. Before any work begins under the change-order, we advise the client of the cost and necessity and obtain approval through signature. This eliminates surprises at the end of the project, and the client is aware of every need and cost.
Q: WHY SHOULD A CONTRACTOR have LIABILITY INSURANCE?
While your home is being remodeled, you should insure the structure and its contents. If you don’t, then you could be exposed to certain risks that are out of your control, including fire and weather. You should also protect yourself by verifying that whoever is remodeling your home is carrying proper general liability insurance coverage, which Buildersmith is happy to provide before starting our projects.
Q: WILL YOU PROVIDE ME WITH A SCHEDULE OF WORK FOR MY PROJECT?
We absolutely will keep the client up to date with each step of the project. An initial schedule will be given at the onset of the project and any changes to that schedule will be relayed to the client.
Q: HOW LONG WILL MY PROJECT TAKE?
Each project has different details that makes no two projects alike. Contact us and we would be happy to give you an estimate of time for your specific project.
Q: SHOULD I MOVE OUT OF MY HOME FOR THE DURATION OF MY PROJECT?
Buildersmith recognizes that we enter into the lives of clients as we conduct our business. We do everything necessary to limit this invasion into the house, by sectioning off areas to be worked on from the rest of the house, minimizing noise, and having utmost respect for our clients. However, there are times when the project becomes extensive and it may be more practical for the client to move out for temporary time. Give us a call to determine what would be the best situation for you.
Q: CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT WHO WILL BE IN MY HOME?
All of our craftsmen are appropriately licensed and insured in the state of Tennessee. We want to make sure that you are totally comfortable with our employees. Each and every craftsman we employ upholds the same values of honesty and integrity as our project managers. We often receive compliments from customers about how our team becomes “like a second family” to them during the project.
